There’s nothing worse than waking up to a snow-covered car when you’re already late for work. When that happens, you might be tempted to just do the minimum amount of clearing and head on your way. No matter how much or how little time you have available, or how cold it is, or how much you just don’t want to, driving without clearing your car of snow and ice is dangerous for everyone on the road.

First, consider your own vehicle. If you fail to clean any one of your windows or the windshield fully, you risk impairing your own view. You’re supposed to be able to see through the glass at all times in order to be fully aware of your surroundings. Allowing your windshield wipers to only clear in their own path obstructs your forward view.

Next, you’ll want to be sure to clear the top of your car. The snow can begin to melt while you’re driving, causing it to no longer be stuck to the roof. When you come to a stop or simply begin to decelerate, the snow can slide down and obstruct your view. A significant amount could be too much for your wipers to handle and you’ll be unable to move forward safely.

Just as slowing down can cause the snow and ice to slide to the front of your car, accelerating can cause it to fly off the back. The wind resistance coupled with your forward motion could send a sheet of ice from your vehicle straight into another car. A thick enough piece of ice could crack the windshield of a car behind you or create enough of a distraction to cause an accident.

The potential for accidents and injury should be enough of an incentive to make you clear your car, but if not, here’s one more: It could cost you! There are laws in many states that make it illegal to drive your car with an obstructed view and some specifically mention snow and ice. Further, if snow from your car causes damage or an accident, you can be held liable and fined.

Before you hit the road in a snow-covered car, take the time to clear it. You’ll be glad you did, and so will all the other drivers sharing the road with you.
