Your neighbor gets a new car. Your coworker comes in with a brand-new bag seemingly every week. Your Instagram feed is full of people on exotic vacations. Someone from college just went on another guys weekend with his buddies. Your friend just redecorated her living room… again.

Everywhere you look, it seems like people are spending lots of money. You may wonder where they get it or you may wonder why you don’t have it, too. This sort of thinking is bound to get you in trouble. If you’re feeling like you must be doing something wrong that you don’t have all the nice things, here are some things to consider.

  • You’re not seeing the whole picture. You don’t know everything that goes on in a person’s life just like they don’t know every detail of yours. They could be swimming in debt. Maybe they just got an inheritance. Maybe scrimped and saved to afford that purchase.
  • It’s not about you. Other people’s spending is not a reflection of your self-worth. You don’t’ have to do what they do and you don’t need to buy what they buy. You don’t even need to be able to buy what they buy.
  • You need to set your own goals. If something is important to you, you’ll work toward obtaining it. If you want to go on that dream vacation, don’t spend all your money on something else just because it seems like what you should do. Save up for your goals. Don’t worry about anyone else.

When you’re busy looking at what other people are doing and buying, you’re not focusing on your own goals and needs. There’s no one right or wrong way to live – each of us has to set our own agenda. Knowing what you want out of life and what will make you happy will enable you to identify how to budget.

Spending money you don’t have puts you in debt and can wreak havoc on your credit. Spending money on things that aren’t important to you will leave you feeling resentful (not to mention broke!).

You don’t need to keep up with the Joneses. What they’re doing doesn’t matter when it comes to living your best life!
