Did you know that April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month? Doing anything while you drive is dangerous since it lowers your reaction time and makes you less aware of your surroundings. This month, law enforcement around the country will be cracking down on distracted driving and you’re likely to see more education campaigns around as well.

The statistics don’t paint a pretty picture. A recent study of several hundreds of thousands of crashes conducted by Cambridge Mobile Telematics, the world’s leading smartphone-centric telematics provider, found that phone distraction was involved in 52 percent of the trips they studied. The National Safety Council (NSC) found that a minimum of 27% of crashes involve drivers distracted by phones, either by talking or texting.

While phones are a huge distraction, there are many other things we’re doing behind the wheel when we should be driving. Eating, drinking, adjusting the radio, attending to pets or children, applying makeup and performing other personal hygiene tasks are just a few of the ways our eyes and minds are taken off the road. Programming a GPS or simply looking at its map can be enough to cause a crash.

Are you ready to take the pledge to be an attentive driver? The NSC has a page dedicated to declaring that you’ll put down the phone and just drive.
